A Year Ago: SMU and Gustavus met three times a year ago, with the Gusties coming away victorious all three times. Gustavus outscored the Cardinals 12-1 in the teams' two-game MIAC series, winning 6-1 and 6-0, before adding a 3-1 victory in a nonconference game on Jan. 12.

All-Time Series Record: With Friday's 4-1 victory, Gustavus enters tonight's game riding a 16-game unbeaten streak (15-0-1) vs. the Cardinals, and is 22-5-3 all time against SMU. The Cardinals have not beaten the Gusties since the 2001-02 season, when the Cardinals knocked off the Gusties 2-1 in the championship game of the MIAC Tournament.

Cardinal Notes: The Cardinals were held to one goal for the second time in their first four games, having also managed just one goal in a 3-1 season-opening loss to UW-Eau Claire. … Alex Braun (Darwin, Minn.) scored SMU's lone goal vs. Gustavus Friday, giving the SMU freshman two goals this season, tying her with Katie Cachey (Orland Park, Ill.) and Sheree Haslemore (Gore, New Zealand) for the team lead. The trio also lead SMU in points (3), while Stevie Fiek (Rochester, Minn.) and Francie Steger (Chicago, Ill.) share the team lead in assists with two. … Emily Friedl (La Crescent, Minn.) stopped 31 of the Gusties' 34 shots Friday, and has made 70 saves in three games this season. … With their win over UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 8, the Cardinals put an end to their six-game losing streak vs. the Blugolds, dating back to a 5-1 SMU win on Nov. 5, 2005. … SMU's Nov. 8 win over UW-Eau Claire was also SMU's first nonconference win since a 4-2 victory over Finlandia on Feb. 4, 2006, a span of 12 games (0-10-2). …  SMU's overtime games vs. UW-Eau Claire and Lake Forest last weekend were the first back-to-back OT games since the Cardinals beat Concordia (2-1) and Finlandia during the 2005-06 season. … SMU has now allowed three or more goals in 21 of its last 27 games — including the Cardinals' last 13 straight. … The Cardinals — 0-2 on the road this year — won just two of 12 road games last season (2-8-2). … The Cardinals, who scored just nine power play goals a year ago, have already scored four power play goals this season.

Gustie Notes: The Gusties kick off their bid for a sixth straight MIAC regular-season title with their weekend series vs. SMU. … Gustavus, which is currently ranked seventh in the USCHO.com Division III poll, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the 2008-09 MIAC crown by the MIAC women's hockey coaches. … GAC's four goals vs. SMU Friday came from four different players — Mari Gunderson, Melissa Mackley, Kirstin Peterson and Allie Schwab — and all four were their first of the season. … Gustavus seniors Mari Gunderson, Jessie Doig, Jenny Pusch, and Christine Wicker have helped the program post a record of 72-11-2 overall and 52-1-1 in the MIAC during the past three years. … Mollie Carroll netted her first collegiate goal to account for GAC's lone goal vs. Adrian in last Friday's 2-1 loss, while Lynn Hillen scored twice and Alyssa Saunders once in Saturday's 3-0 victory. … Emily Klatt made her first collegiate start a memorable one, stopping all 25 shots in blanking Adrian Saturday. … Fellow freshman Danielle Justice had 17 saves in her first collegiate start the night before.  Justice then followed that up with a 12-save effort vs. the Cardinals Friday evening. … Five of Gustavus' seven goals have come on the powerplay — three vs. Adrian last Saturday and two vs. SMU Friday.
