ST. PAUL, Minn. — Saint Mary's men's swimming and diving coach Eric Lindquist would call his team bullies, but for the third time in two years, the Cardinals flexed their muscles against Macalester.

A year ago, SMU beat the Scots 129-69 as part of the Hamline Quadrangular, then followed that up with a 134-77 triumph in the teams' dual-meet showdown.

And Friday evening, the Cardinals “beat up” on the Scots again, rolling to a 127-91 victory.

“The guys turned in a solid performance,” said Lindquist, whose men's team has now won back-to-back duals for the first time this season. “We got a lot of great swims and we were able to come away with the win.

“In swimming and diving, you don't get too caught up in team place finishes, but any time you can win a dual meet, it's a good feeling.”

The Cardinal women weren't quite as fortunate, as Macalester handed SMU a 127-94 setback.

“On the women's side, it was just a matter of too many seconds and not enough firsts,” said Lindquist. “We had second-place finishes all over the place — we just didn't have enough firsts.”

John Fox (Winona, Minn.) led the way for the SMU men, as the junior collected first-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (56.22) and 50 freestyle (22.55), while Anderw Noyes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) swept the diving competition — winning both the one-meter (139.60) and three-meter (143.55) events — and Tim Tysk (St. Paul, Minn.) touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:56.98).

Paula Jungbauer (Lakeville, Minn.) was second in both the 100 backstroke (1:10.76) and 100 butterfly (1:11.75), while Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) added seconds in both the one-meter (178.35) and three-meter (177.55) diving competitions to lead the Cardinals.

“It was a good day, but hopefully just the tip of the iceberg for us,” said Lindquist whose teams are back in the pool Saturday, taking part in the Macalester Invitational. “It's going to be tough to bounce right back and compete again in the morning, but it will be a good test for us.”
