LA CROSSE, Wis. — It was the final tune-up before the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team kicked off its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday against Macalester.
And after watching his Cardinals drop a 72-61 decision to UW-La Crosse, Saint Mary's University men's basketball coach Todd Landrum could see that his Cardinals were still leaking a little oil.
The Cardinals raced out to a 31-28 halftime advantage, knocking down 10 of their 30 first-half field-goal attempts — including 4 of 5 from beyond the 3-point line.
And SMU was even better in the second half, shooting 43 percent from the field (12-for-28). The problem was, as good as the Cardinals were in the game's final 20 minutes, UW-La Crosse was even better, draining 15 of 31 field-goal attempts in sealing its third win in four games this season.
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) led the way for the Cardinals, scoring a game-high 23 points, while
Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) added 19 and
Josh Knights (Plainfield, Wis.) chipped in a career-best 10 rebounds.
Tony Mane scored 17 points to lead a trio of Eagles in double figures, with Brandon Brown chipping in 15 and Kurt Kincaid tallying 10.
The Cardinals, who fall to 1-3 overall, kick off their MIAC schedule at home on Wednesday, hosting Macalester in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
