For the second straight day, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team found themselves deadlocked at 4-4 at the end of regulation. Unlike Friday evening, however — when Sheree Haslemore (Gore, New Zealand) scored two minutes into the extra session — this time around, the Cardinals came out on the short end, as Lake Forest's Kim Herring scored 52 seconds into OT to lift the Foresters to the 5-4 win Saturday afternoon at the SMU Ice Arena.

“In a span of two days, we've been on the winning end, and the losing end, of an overtime game,” said SMU coach Terry Mannor. “The losing end doesn't feel quite as good.”

The Cardinals floated into Saturday's nonconference game against Lake Forest on Cloud Nine ¬— thanks to Haslemore's overtime heroics.

The Foresters, however, forced the Cardinals back down to earth — and in a hurry — as Lake Forest scored just two minutes into the first period, and, after Katie Cachey (Orland Park, Ill.) knotted things at 1-1 13 minutes later, added two more first-period goals to take what appeared to be a commanding 3-1 advantage into the lockerroom after 20 minutes of play.

Firmly grounded following Lake Forest's first— period domination, the Cardinals did what they do best, battle from behind, as SMU got second-period goals from Haslemore and Jamie Henneman (Countryside, Ill.) to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third period.

“I don't know what it is, but we just don't want to come out and play that first period,” said Mannor, whose team was outshot 12-9 in the opening period, before dominating the middle 20 minutes, holding a commanding 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. “We played hard for four of the six periods this weekend. And in those other two periods, we gave up four of nine goals we allowed all weekend.

“It's not a 40-minute game,” Mannor added. “We've got to find a way to play like we played in the second and third periods for an entire game.”

For the second straight game, the Cardinals found themselves staring at a 4-3 third-period deficit, as Lake Forest's Lynn Swita picked up a loose puck in front of the net and beat SMU goalie Emily Friedl (La Crescent, Minn.).

Fortunately for SMU, the Cardinals also bounced back from that 4-3, third-period deficit for the second straight day, as Ingrid Klockars (Wheaton, Ill.) banged home a Haslemore rebound for her second goal of the season at 5:08.

Unlike Friday, however, the Cardinals didn't have any tricks up their sleeve in overtime, as Herring picked up a loose back, moved into the slot and fired a shot that beat Friedl to the stick side.

“It's a tough way to lose a game,” said Mannor, whose team opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend, taking on defending regular-season and playoff champion Gustavus. “We did a lot of nice things this weekend, but we've still got a long ways to go.”
