The Cardinals got out to a quick start, nailing their first two 3-pointers, but SMU quickly cooled off, as Bethel ran away with a 78-62 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon. … Gustavus, meanwhile, cracked the century mark for the first time this season, bombing Concordia with 11 3-pointers en route to a 100-67 victory Saturday.

A Year Ago: Gustavus picked up a pair of wins against the Cardinals in their two conference meetings a year ago. Gustavus outrebounded SMU 45-23 — including 20-6 on the offensive end — as the Gusties rolled to an 85-79 victory on Jan 7, then followed that up with a 93-point effort in a 93-60 victory on Feb. 6.

All-Time Series Record: With their two conference wins a year ago, Gustavus improved to 87-38 all-time against SMU. The Gusties have won the last 30 meetings between the two teams, dating back to a 72-70 Cardinal win in their second meeting of the 1992-93 season.

Cardinal Notes: The Cardinals, who picked up their first conference-opening win in their last three seasons with their win over Macalester last Wednesday, had their bid for their first 2-0 start since 2005-06 foiled with Saturday's loss to Bethel. … SMU's two-point victory over the Scots Wednesday also snapped a 12-game home losing streak. SMU, which went 0-10 at home a year ago, last won a home game on Jan. 27, 2007, when the Cardinals dropped Hamline 84-70. … Josh Knights (Plainfield, Wis.) scored a career-best 23 points in SMU's loss to Bethel Saturday. Knights' effort snapped a string of 22 straight games in which Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) or Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) led the team in scoring. … Knights' 23-point effort included a 5-for-6 performance from behind the 3-point line. … Wright chipped in 14 points vs. the Royals and has scored 10 or more points in 25 of the Cardinals' last 31 games. … Wright tossed in a game-high 24 points against Macalester last Wednesday.
