ST. PETER, Minn. — Mother Nature decided to make the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team wait a little longer than usual before the Cardinals could take the court against Gustavus Wednesday evening.
The early evening snow forced the officials to arrive late to Gus Young Court, forcing the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game to start nearly 30 minutes later than scheduled.
After watching her team managed just 17 first-half points, SMU coach
Mandy Pearson probably wished the officials hadn't come at all.
Gustavus outscored the Cardinals 35-17 in the opening 20 minutes and the Gusties never took their foot off the accelerator, racing to their season-opening fifth straight win, a 75-40 conference decision over SMU.
Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, scoring a game-high 14 points. The sophomore was the only Cardinal in double figures, as SMU shot just 37 percent from the field and sank just 3 of 13 3-point attempts.
Molly Geske scored a team-best 12 points to lead a trio of Gusties in double figures. Brianna Radtke and Molly Mathiowetz each added 10 points, as 12 GAC players scored at least one point.
The Cardinals, still searching for their first win of the season in falling to 0-3 in the MIAC and 0-5 overall, return to action Wednesday, traveling to St. Thomas for a 7:30 p.m. conference game. It will be the sixth of seven straight road games for SMU, which does not play at home until a Jan. 3 contest against Carleton.
