WINONA, Minn. — Coming off back-to-back losses to St. Catherine last weekend — the first time in the program's history that the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team had been swept by the Wildcats — coach
Terry Mannor and the Cardinals were in dire need of a victory Friday evening against St. Olaf.
Mission accomplished.
Ingrid Klockars (Wheaton, Ill.) scored two goals — including the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining in regulation — as the Cardinals broke out their losing ways with a 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Friday at the SMU Ice Arena.
"This was a big win for us — a real step in the right direction," said Mannor, whose team erupted for a season high five goals in snapping their two-game losing streak. "We played very well — for the most part. We had a bit of a letdown in the third period, but overall it was just good to get the win.
"We needed it."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 first-period lead, extending it to 3-1 with Klockars' first goal with less than two minutes left in the period.
Back-to-back powerplay goals pulled the Oles even, but SMU responded with goals from
Ashley Mileykovsky (Northbrook, Ill.) and Kockars to seal the win.
"It's good to see us bounce back (after last weekend)," Mannor said. "We did not play well last weekend, and we needed a game like this. Can we still play better? No question. But this was definitely a step in the right direction."
