ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team was hoping for a double celebration Monday evening in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against Hamline.

A win would snap the Cardinals' two-game losing streak and earn SMU a split in their two conference games against the Pipers.

Plus, a mere eight points would give SMU senior Jess Weisbrod (Rollingstone, Minn.) her 1,000th career point, making her just the eighth player in Cardinal history to earn that distinction.

The Pipers, however, had other ideas, as they not only rained on the Cardinals' parade — handing SMU a 73-59 setback —  but they also foiled Weisbrod's 1,000-point bid, holding her to just four points.

Hamline shot 44 percent from the field in the game's opening 20 minutes building a seven-point, 32-25 advantage at the break, and never looking back in the second half, outscoring SMU 41-32 to complete the 16-point victory.

With Weisbrod held 10 points below her season average, Stephanie Ayers (Deer River, Minn.) did her best to pick up the offensive slack, scoring a team-best 15 points, while Alyse Coates (West St. Paul, Minn.) chipped in 10 points. Jessica Heinen scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Pipers.(9-9 MIAC, 12-9 overall).

The Cardinals (3-15, 4-17), who have now dropped three straight, return to action Wednesday, playing host to St. Catherine in the first of two conference home games this week.
