MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Don Olson was not happy with his team's performance in Friday's 5-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to St. Thomas at the SMU Ice Arena.

"We came out flat and never got anything going," Olson said after the game. "This was not the type of performance I would have expected from this team — I was very disappointed with our effort."

Olson was much happier with his Cardinals' effort on Saturday — unfortunately for the Cardinals' head coach, that effort wasn't enough to slow down the Tommies, as St. Thomas' offense feasted on the Cardinals for a second straight night, once again scoring five goals — and this time keeping SMU off the scoreboard all together in a 5-0 conference win at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

"We played much harder tonight than we did last night, which was good to see — we just got beat by a better team," said Olson, whose Cardinals have now lost six staight to UST and have dropped five of their last six games. "You have to give St. Thomas a lot of credit, they are a very talented team and they are played very well right now.

"We had our share of chances, we just weren't able to put the puck in the net."

After a scoreless first period, in which the Tommies outshot SMU 11-5, UST turned up the heat — thanks in large part to four Cardinal second-period penalties — including a five-minute checking from behind major on Matt Staehely (Shorewood, Ill.) — that resulted in three St. Thomas powerplay goals.

In fact, by the time the horn sounded to end the second peirod, St. Thomas had pelted SMU goalie Dan Smith (Rochester, Minn .) with 23 shots — and turned that 0-0 tie into a 4-0 rout.

"(St. Thomas) took it to us in that second period," said Olson. "We spent an awful lot of time in the penalty box (in the second period) and they've got an excellent powerplay that we just couldn't shut down.

"It's unfortunate that the final score ended up 5-0, because it didn't really feel like a 5-0 type of game," Olson added. "I was glad to see us come back and play more like we are capable of playing, but tonight, that just wasn't enough."
