MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — It was a tale of two halves for the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team.
A good half.
And a not-so-good half.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that not-so-good half was their downfall, as Augsburg held SMU to a season-low 17 second-half points in breaking opening a five-point game and rolling to a 64-46 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Wednesday evening.
"The second half just killed us," said SMU coach
Mandy Pearson, whose Cardinals saw their losing streak climb to six straight — marking the third time this season SMU has dropped six in a row. "Give (Augsburg) a lot of credit, they shot the ball very well and did a nice job on the boards (holding a 50-31 rebound advantage).
"We did OK in the first half, we just didn't come out with the same intensity in the second half, and that really hurt us."
The Cardinals scored the game's first two baskets, but that was the last time SMU would enjoy the view from out front, as Augsburg used a 9-0 run to take a 9-4 lead and the Auggies never looked back, leading by as many as 12, before settling for their five-point, 34-29 halftime advantage.
And, unfortunately for SMU, that was the good half.
The not-so-good half consisted of just seven field goals — on 28 attempts — and a 2-for-9 effort from the 3-point line.
And the Auggies took advantage of the Cardinals' frigid shooting, pushing their lead to as many as 15 on four different occasions, before Katie LaGrave drained a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to give Augsburg its biggest lead of the game, 64-46.
Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) led the way for SMU, scoring 12 points, while Shannon Renne netted 15 points and Kristina Lurken added a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Auggies.
