Senior Salute
WINONA, Minn. — Before the game, they were in the spotlight as two of the six graduating seniors honored on Senior Night at the SMU Ice Arena.
When the lights came up, and the pre-game festivities were over,
David Gross (Grasston, Minn.) Adam Gill#
(Rochester, Minn.) remained in the spotlight and on center stage, as Gross scored two goals and Gill had three assists in leading the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team snapped a two-game losing streak — and sent their seniors off with one final home win — with a 4-3 victory over Augsburg Friday.
"What a great way for our seniors to go out," said SMU coach Don Olson, whose team had lost five of its last six heading into Friday's first game of their two-game conference series against the Auggies. "This group of seniors has done so much for this program, it's nice for them to step up and have a big night when we really needed it."
After a scoreless first period, Gross got the Cardinals on the board with the first of his two goals, scoring on a picture-perfect tic-tac-toe feed from
Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) and Gill five minutes into the second period.
Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.) pushed the SMU lead to 2-0 five minutes later — netting the second of SMU's four powerplay goals.
Mario Mjellelli cut the gap to 2-1 at 13:49, before Gross scored his 12th of the season, again off assists from Gill and Bohn to give SMU a 3-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.
Augsburg would again cut the Cardinals' lead in half on a Jim Jensen goal 1:39 into the third period, before
Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) gave SMU some breathing room, scoring his team-leading 15th of the season — with Gill and Bohn getting the assists — at 16:18.
The Auggies would make it a 4-3 game with 37 seconds remaining, but goalie
Dan Smith (Rochester, Minn.) and the rest of the Cardinals held Augsburg at bay to seal the win.
"We needed a game like this," said Olson, whose team was 4-for-7 on the powerplay — including all three second-period goals. "I was proud of the way the guys came out and played. When you don't have (the playoffs) to play for, sometimes you just have to play for pride, and for your teammates — and tonight, that's exactly what this group did.
"This was a good win."
