MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — On the scoresheet, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team dominated Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg.
The Cardinals held a commanding 42-27 advantage in shots on goal — including a 17-5 edge in the game's final 20 minutes.
The scoreboard, however, told a much different story of dominance, as the Auggies used a three-goal second period to hand SMU its season-high fifth straight loss, 5-3.
"We dominated play for most of the game, we just weren't able to convert on enough of our chances," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor, whose team closes out its season Saturday, hosting the Auggies in the second game of their two-game series. "Give (Augsburg) credit, they made the most of the chances they had."
Jamie Henneman (Countryside, Ill.) got the Cardinals on the board first, netting her third of the season three minutes into the opening period. After Augsburg's Tiffany Magnuson knotted things at 1-1 10 minutes later, SMU regained its one-goal advantage on a goal by
Sonja Sorakrai (Richfield, Minn.).
That, however, is where the Cardinals' offense stalled, and the Auggies' offense kicked into high gear.
Augsburg would get goals from Magnuson, Whitney Restemayer and Sara Toft in the game's middle period, then got a third goal from Magnuson 12 seconds into the third period to push its lead to 5-1.
Amy Zimniewicz (River Falls, Wis.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with six minutes remaining in regulation, but it was too little, too late.
"It's not that we played that poorly," said Mannor. "We just didn't take advantage of all the offensive chances we had. We've struggled to score goals all season, and tonight was just another example of that."
