WINONA, Minn. — This time around, three was enough.
Sort of.
For the second night in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team scored three goals in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg.
Only this time, the Cardinals got at least one point for their efforts.
Fresh off a 5-3 loss to the Auggies on Friday — a game in which SMU gave up three second-period goals to squander a 2-1 lead — SMU once again found themselves playing catch-up on Saturday, as; Augsburg scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the game's final period.
Over those final 20 minutes, however, the Cardinals were dominant, peppering Augsburg goalie Toni Menth with 21 shots — two of which found the back of the net, as
Jenn Shire (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) and
Amy Zimniewicz (River Falls, Wis.) both scored third-period goals to lift SMU to a 3-3 tie in the teams' season final at the SMU Ice Arena.
"It's a nice way to end the season — especially having Jenn score on Senior Night," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor, who watched seniors Shire, Val Ridriguez (Woodbury, Minn.,) and
Jessie Smith (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) play their final games in a Cardinal uniform. "I was proud of the way this group battled back. They could have folded up after the second period, but they didn't — they came out and played one of the best periods of the year.
"And it was nice to see them get rewarded a bit for that."
Augsburg's Andrea Toft and SMU's
Ingrid Klockars (Wheaton, Ill.) traded first-period goals,, before the Auggies' Katie Medd beat Smith twice in the second period to give Augsburg what appearned to be a commanding 3-1 lead.
But back stormed the Cardinals, pulling to within one on Shire's fourth goal of the season at 5:56 of the third period, before Zimniewicz forced overtime with her game-tying goal with 45 seconds remaining in regulation.
Both teams had golden scoring opportunities in the five-minutes overtime, but Mehn stymied SMU's
Jill Rhody (St. Paul, Minn.), while Smith foiled Tiffany Magnuson's breakaway attempt with a sliding pad save.
"I think in the third period, we really showed the potential of this team," said Mannor, whose Cardinals close out the season with a 5-15-3 overall record, including a 5-11-2 mark in the MIAC. "We definitely had some ups and downs this year, but, hopefully, with a year of experience under our belts, we can get pointed back in the right direction next season."
