WINONA, Minn. — For the first 10 minutes Wednesday afternoon, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team matched Gustavus shot-for-shot — thanks in large part to the hot hand of freshman
Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.).
Holland scored 11 of the Cardinals' first 19 points as the Cardinals held ;a 19-17 lead with 12:25 remaining in the opening half.
Holland didn't score again until there was 6:58 remaining in the second half — a span of over 25 minutes. And by the time Holland's jumper floated softly through the net, the Gusties had turned that early two-point deficit into a 34-point, 80-46 advantage en route to a 93-60 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at the SMU Gym.
"We couldn't hit anything tonight," said SMU coach Mike Trewick, whose team has now dropped a season-high 10 straight games. "Give (Gustavus) a lot of credit — they shot the ball very well, and did a nice job underneath.
"We hung with them pretty well early, but once (Gustavus) got on a roll, we didn't have the answers."
The Gusties missed just 16 first-half field-goal attempts, and pulled down the offensive rebound on nine of those shots in cruising to a 48-29 halftime advantage. And it was more of the same in the second half, as the Gusties posted their second straight 20-for-36 half to complete the rout.
Holland finished with a game-high 17 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line that extended his streak to 15 straight made free throws.
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 13 points — eight in the second half — while GAC's Trevor Wittwer equaled Holland's game-high performance, tossing in 17 points to lead three Gustie players in double figures.
"We've just got to keep plugging away," said Trewick, whose Cardinals (1-14 MIAC, 1-19 overall) travel to Carleton on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game. "We didn't shoot the ball that poorly (going 23-for-51, 45 percent from the field), we just couldn't seem to keep pace with what (Gustavus) was doing."
