WINONA, Minn. — It's been a tough season for the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team, and they have struggled through more than their fair share of tough losses.

But none was as tough as Saturday's.

Saint Mary's took its first lead of the game, 71-70, on a Will Wright' (Chicago, Ill.) layup with three seconds remaining. Following a timeout, the Knights got the ball to Zach Johnson, who missed his shot, but senior Tommy Drake had a tip-in as time expired to lift Carleton to a 72-71 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

"It's tough to lose a game that way," said SMU coach Mike Trewick, whose team dropped its 11th straight. "For (Carleton) to get the ball in, miss a shot, and make the put-back — all in three seconds — that's heartbreaking.

"I feel terrible for the guys," Trewick added. "We definitely played well enough to win, and it's unfortunate they weren't able to be rewarded for their efforts."

Drake was 1-for-10 from the field, with his lone bucket accounting for the winning points. Bryan Roesett reached double-digits for the 19th time this year, scoring 12 points and grabbing six rebounds.

Saint Mary's used a barrage of three-pointers to rally back from a 65-47 deficit with 7:28 remaining. The Cardinals converted on nine of their last 11 possessions, including six shots from beyond the arc.

"it was great to see us battle back the way we did," said Trewick, who got a game-high 28 points from Wright, while Lukas Hollandd (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in 19 points and Josh Knights (Plainfield, Wis.) tallied 15 — including 13 in the second half. "It's just too bad it had to end the way it did."
