WINONA, Minn. — Two winning streaks came to a screeching halt Sunday afternoon at the SMU Tennis Center.

Unfortunately for the Saint Mary's University tennis teams, it was their streaks that were snapped, as St. Thomas beat the Cardinal men 8-1, then swept past the SMU women 9-0.

"We ran into a very tough St. Thomas team today," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg, whose women had entered Sunday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match boasting a nine-match winning streak, whlie his Cardinals had won their last two and four of its last five. "Both (St. Thomas) teams were  filled with tough players at the top of the lineup and depth throughout — which is why they are near the top of the conference for both teams.

"We played with spirit, we just couldn't capitalize on any of the chances we did create."

Steve Clements (La Crosse, Wis.) collected SMU's lone with against the high-powered Tommies, as  the SMU senior outlasted UST's Josh Tomashek 7-6, 7-6 in a match that did not see a service break. Walter Mannino (Chicago, Ill.) took the Tommies' Arya Vayghan to three sets, but lost 4-6, 6-4, 10-4, while the rest of the SMU lineup failed to win more than four games, all falling in straight sets.

On the women's side, the Cardinals could not crack the Tommies, dropping all six singles matches in straight sets, with falling 8-3, 8-2 and 8-1 in the three doubles matches.

"It was disappointing to lose," admitted Halberg. "But, hopefully, these losses will serve us well in matches to come."
