Women's Match Summary vs. Concordia
WINONA, Minn. — New day.
New opponent.
Same results.
And that was good news for the Saint Mary's University tennis teams.
For the second day in a row, the Cardinal women did not lose a match Sunday, as the Cardinals — fresh off a 9-0 rout of Loras on Saturday — made it a second straight clean sweep, blanking Concordia 9-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the SMU Tennis Center.
It was a repeat performance for the SMU men as well, as the Cardinals — 8-1 winners over Loras on Saturday — posted their second straight 8=1 win in dropping the Cobbers.
"It was a great way for us to cap off a really solid weekend," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose women's team pushed its winning streak to five in a row with its third 9-0 win of the season, while the Cardinal men are in the midst of their first two-game winning streak of the year. "Both teams got off to a strong start in doubles and never let up.
"We knew this was an important match for both teams," Halberg added. "And everyone came ready to play."
After rolling to three straight doubles wins, the road got a little more difficult for the Cardinal women, needing three sets to post two of their six singles wins.
Toni Troumbly (Bovey, Minn.) and
Brittney Nielsen (Apple Valley, Minn.) were each taken to the limit as Troumbly posted a 6-2, 1-6, 10-5 win at No. 4 singles, while Nielsen rallied from one set down to beat Kelsey Schendel 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 at No. 5.
The Cardinal men, meanwhile, did not drop a set in routing the Cobbers, getting straight-set wins from
Walter Mannino (Chicago, Ill.), Pawel Szczepkowski (Opolskie, Poland),
Steve Clements (La Crosse, Wis.),
Andy Weigman (Western Springs, Ill.) and
Justin Loeffler (Winona, Minn.).
"I was very happy with our performance all weekend," said Halberg. "We played some great tennis, and both teams picked up a pair of much-needed wins.
"Hopefully we can keep it rolling."
