Saint John's Match Summary
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team entered Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Saint John's looking for their first win against the Johnnies.
Ever.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they left the SMU Tennis Center still searching for that first-ever win, as SJU raced out to a 3-0 win after the doubles portion and won four of the six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 7-2 conference win.
"We put up a good battle tonight, but this time, we were the team that wasn't quite deep enough," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "Still, matches like this will make all our players better in the long run. It was a good match, with a not-so-good end result."
Walter Mannino (Chicago, Ill.) and
Steve Clements (La Crosse, Wis.) picked up SMU's lone two wins, as Mannino outlasted the Johnnies' Trevor Beach 6-3, 6-7, 11-9 at No 1 singles, while the going was much easier for Clements, who won by default.
"The guys put up a good fight," said Halberg, whose men had their two-match winning streak snapped with the loss. "It just wasn't enough against a very good Saint John's team."
