Gustavus Match Summary
WINONA, Minn. — When it came to summing up Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Gustavus, Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg needed just two words: "Too much."
The Gusties, ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA national poll, were certainly too much for the Cardinals at the SMU Tennis Center, as Gustavus rolled to a 9-0 conference win.
"They were just too much — too much," said Halberg, whose team fell to 1-5 in the MIAC and 5-8 overall. "Gustavus has been among the best teams in the country for a number of years, and this season is no different — they are a tough, tough team and we just didn't have enough in the tank to keep up with them."
The Gusties did not lose a set in dispatching of the Cardinals, losing just 21 games in the six singles matches, while sweeping the three doubles matches 8-5, 8-2, 8-2.
"It's not that our guys played that poorly — I thought they gave it a great effort," said Halberg. "(Gustavus) was just that much better."
