WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team entered Sunday's nonconference match against Wartburg feeling a bit down in the dumps.

Three losses in a two-day stretch against three of the top teams in the region will do that to a team.

SMU may have been down when they took the court against the Knights, but they certainly weren't out, as the Cardinals took out their frustrations in the form of a 7-2 win at the SMU Tennis Center.

The Cardinal men, also entering Sunday's match on the heels of a three-match losing streak, were equally as impressive against the Knights. cruising to a 6-0 victory in a match that did not include a doubles portion due to time constraints.

"I'm proud of the way both of our teams played today," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "The men got a really solid and well-deserved win today.  They started really well and never really let Wartburg in.

"The ladies had a really tough tournament in Madison (at the Midwest Region Invitational) and then they had to go up against a very strong Wartburg team (which was riding a four-match winning streak)," Halberg added. "Yet they hung tough and got a good win despite everything that Wartburg threw at them. It was a great way to finish off the weekend."

The Cardinal men picked up five straight-set singles wins, while Steven Mino (Austin, Minn.) bounced back from a 6-3 second-set loss to beat Wartburg's Andrew Seeba, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.

The SMU women, meanwhile, used a pair of three-set singles wins from Aubrey Hirsch (Topeka, Kan.) and Courtney Spartz (Western Springs, Ill.) to take of the six singles matches, then swept the three doubles matches en route to their 12th win of the season.

"It was nice for both teams to get back on the winning track," said Halberg. "It was a good way to end the weekend."
