Northwestern Match Summary
ST. PAUL, Minn. — it's been a season of streaks for the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team.
Of their eight losses, six have come during a pair of three-match losing streaks.
And, heading into Wednesday's nonconference match against Northwestern, four of the Cardinals' six wins were during a pair of two-match winning streaks.
Make that six of their seven wins have come during three two-match winning streaks.
SMU put together its third two-match winning streak of the season Wednesday, as the Cardinals followed up a
6-0 victory over Wartburg on Sunday with a 7-2 victory over Northwestern.
"it was a good win for the guys," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose men moved to 7-8 overall heading into Friday's key Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with Saint John's at the SMU Tennis Center. "Everyone played very well — it was a solid team effort."
The final score certainly didn't tell the whole story Wednesday, as four of the six singles matches went the maximum three sets, with the Cardinals winning four of those five.
Pawel Szczepkowski (Opolskie, Poland) won 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 at No. 2 singles, while
Andy Weigman (Maple Plain, Minn.) won
4-6, 6-4, 10-3 at No. 4 and
Steven Mino (Austin, Minn.) was a 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 winner at No. 6.
SMU added wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to ice the nonconference victory.
"It took us a little while to adjust to playing outdoors, but we were eventually able to do so," said Halberg. "Give credit to Northwestern, they put up a real battle the whole way."
