ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team, everything seemed to go right during the Cardinals' season-opening three-game winning streak.

In their bid for win No. 4 Thursday afternoon against St. Catherine, everything seemed to go wrong, as the Wildcats handed SMU its first loss of the season, a 3-0 setback in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.

"It's not that we played that poorly," said SMU first-year head coach Eric Zimmerman, whose team had defeated UM-Morris (2-1), Presentation (9-0) and UW-Superior (3-0) to open their season. "We just made a couple of mistakes and (St. Catherine) capitalized on them.

"It's not exactly the way we were hoping to start the conference season, but you have to give St. Catherine a lot of credit, they are a much better team than they were a year ago — they played very well today."

Mariana Sanchez (Puebla, Mexico) finished with nine saves for the Cardinals, who return to action Saturday, playing host to St. Olaf in a 1 p.m. MIAC game at Ochyrmowycz Field.
