Game Summary vs.St. Olaf /
GameDay Online
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Saint Mary's University goalkeeper
Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) could have posted a shutout Saturday afternoon against St. Olaf — and the Cardinals still would not have won.
The Cardinals' offense remained in an early season deep-freeze, as St. Olaf held the to just two shots on goal en route to a decisive 6-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
"We are just not creating an offense all of the sudden," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose team has now been shut out in its last two games, having been outscored 10-0 in the process. "But you can't pin all the blame on our offense, either. You aren't going to win too many collegiate soccer games when you give up six goals.
"We have got to do a better job at both ends," Dembiec added. "Sure, we've got to start scoring some goals, but we've also got to do a beter job of keep our opponents off the board, too."
The Cardinals could not find a way to shut down St. Olaf's John Zeitlow, who posted his second hat trick of the season, scoring twice in the game's opening 45 minutes, as the Oles took a 3-0 advantage into halftime. Zeitlow completed his hat trick in the game's 74th minute, before Logan Rathjen scored twice in a 10-minute span to ice the win.
"It's disappointing," Dembiec said of the loss, the Cardinals' third straight. "We can't afford to be making the mistakes that we are. This team has a ton of talent, but right now we just aren't clicking right now."
The Cardinals, who fall to 0-1-0 in the MIAC and 1-4-0 overall, are off until Saturday, when they play host to Hamline in an MIAC contest.
