LAKE CITY, Minn. — They are getting closer.

Just not quite close enough.

The Saint Mary's University men's golf team put together one of its best team performances of the season — including a one-over-par medalist effort of 72 by Tony Hynes (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and a third-place 77 by Andy Roberts (Rochester, Minn.) — but the Cardinals still came up short, falling to Bethel 313-327 in a Minnesota Intercollegaite Athletic Conference dual Thursday afternoon.

"It was a good performance," said SMU coach Jeff Stangl. "We got three pretty solid scores, but our fourth score wasn't as low as we need it to be. We aren't quite where we want to be, but we're getting closer."

Along with the efforts of Hynes and Roberts, SMU also got an 84 from Rob Klein (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and 94s from Keith Fahrforth (Winfield, Ill.) and Ryan Brodd (Woodbury, Minn.).

Bethel's Tony Weber shared medalist honors with Hyne, while the Royals also got a 78 from Bjorn Hanson, an 80 from Toby Robinson, and 83 from Charlie Cook and an 84 from Mason Swenson.

The Cardinals are back in action Sunday and Monday, taking part in the Winona State Invitational.
