WINONA, Minn. — After opening their season with five straight road games, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team finally got to kick off its home season Saturday evening against Hamline.

Well, sort of, since SMU's first five home games will be played at Winona State's Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium while the finishing touches are put on SMU's new track and field/soccer complex.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals found themselves staring at a 1-0 deficit before the home fans even had a chance to get comfortable in their seats, as Hamline scored 38 seconds into the first half.

The Pipers may have scored early, but the Cardinals scored late, as SMU's Bobby Gas (Lake Zurich, Ill.) netted the game's equalizer with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation to earn SMU a 1-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tie.

Drew Lukas got the Pipers on the board off the game's opening tip, as the Piper junior picked up a loose ball, hit the ball in mid-air and rifled a shot past SMU goalkeeper Jon Szafranski ((Barrington, Ill.).

The Cardinals threatened on numerous occasions, but couldn't get a shot Hamline goallkeeper John Moening, until Gas' shot found the lower right corner with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation.

SMU (1-4-1 overall) are back in action Sunday, playing host to UW-Platteville in a 2 p.m. nonconference game at Maxwell Field.
