ST. PAUL, Minn. — The last time the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team scored two goals in a game — and lost — was on Oct. 19, 2004, when SMU dropped a 3-2 decision to St. Olaf.

A span of 21 games.

So when Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to give SMU a 2-1 lead 21 minutes into the first half of Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Hamline, a Cardinal win should have been a sure thing, right?

Cardinal coach Eric Zimmerman could only wish.

Jamie Kelly scored the first of her back-to-back goals 13 minutes into the second half, then netted the game-winner two minutes into overtime, as the Pipers handed SMU a 3-2 conference setback.

"It's a tough loss to swallow, because we played so well," said Zimmerman, whose team dropped its third straight, falling to 0-3 in the MIAC and 3-3 overall. "A lot of the things we struggled with the last two games seemed to be corrected today, we just didn't get the result we were hoping for."

The Cardinals, who entered the game in the midst of a 214-minute scoreless drought — dating back to Sibik's second goal in a 3-0 win vs. UW-Superior on Sept. 5 — wasted little time getting their offense on track, as Bethany Kaufmann (Green Bay, Wis.) took a feed from Sibik and beat Hamline goalkeeper Liz Stock before the game was even two minutes old.

And the first-half fireworks were just beginning.

Haley Leverington knotted the game at 1-1 at the 18-minute mark, before Sibik gave the Cardinals their second lead of the game, scoring three minutes later.

"It was good to see us get our offense back on track a bit," said Zimmerman, whose team returns to action Sunday, playing host to UW-Platteville in a nonconference game at noon at Winona State's Maxwell Field. "It's just too bad the ladies weren't able to get a better result for their effort."
