WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's and UW-Plateville men's soccer teams haven't faced each other in 10 years, dating back to a 2-1 Cardinal win on Oct. 23, 1998.

And after watching his Cardinals' get dominated through the opening 45 minutes Sunday afternoon, SMU coach Chris Dembiec probably won't want to see the Pioneers for another 10 years.

UW-Platteville held the Cardinals without a shot on goal in the first half, while peppering SMU goalkeeper Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) with seven first-half shots — including a B.J. Gottschlich goal, not to mention two others that caromed off the goal post — and never looked back, rolling to a 3-0 nonconference victory at Winona State's Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.

“We just couldn't seem to get anything going,” said SMU coach Chris Demiec, whose team was coming off a 1-1, double-overtime tie against Hamline Saturday evening. “I think we were a little worn out after (Saturday's) game, but that's really no excuse, we didn't play up to our abilities.

“Give Platteville credit, they are a good team and they pressured us from start to finish.”

The Cardinals managed their first shot on goal came 12 minutes into the second half, but Jovenel D'Haiti's (Evanston, Ill.) 40-yard free kick was easily handled by Pioneer goalkeeper Kris Bosshart.

UW-Platteville continued to hound the Cardinal net in the second half, getting goals from Holle and Tyrone Creech to seal the win — the Pioneers' fifth straight win.

“We need to be better than we were today,” said Dembiec, whose team is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Gustavus for a conference game. “Right now we are way too inconsistent — we were pretty solid (Saturday), and then today we seemed to struggle in every facet of the game.”
