WINONA, Minn. — Less than 24 hours after the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team battled Hamline to a 1-1 tie at Winona State's Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium, the Cardinal women decided to take a page of uf their male counterpart's playbook.
In fact, for women's coach Eric Zimmerman, watching his women take on UW-Platteville Sunday was eerily similar to watching the men against Hamline the night before.
The SMU men gave up a goal less than a minute into the first half, then got the equalizer off the foot of freshman
Bobby Gas (Lake Zurich, Ill.) — his second goal of the season — with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation as SMU salvaged the 1-1 tie.
Sunday afternon against the Pioneers, the SMU women found themsevles staring at a 1-0 deficit — in the game's opening minutes — then got the equalizer — with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation — off the foot of freshman
Amanda Rahman (Rochester, Minn.) — her second goal of the season — as SMU salvaged a 1-1 nonconference tie.
Can you say, "Deja vu?"
"It's good to see us battle back the way we did," said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman, whose team was playing its second overtime game in the last 24 hours, having dropped a 3-2 OT decision to Hamline Saturday afternoon. "This game was a real battle from start to finish. We got put on our heels a bit with that early (UW-Platteville) goal, but we hung in their pretty well.
"I didn't think we did as well in the offensive third of the field as we would have liked, but overall, I was pretty pleased with our effort."
Allie Metcalfe got the Pioneers on the board early, splitting through a pair of SMU defenders and beating Cardinal goalkeeper
Lauren Mess (Lake Geneva, Wis.) to the lower right-hand corner.
With the Pioneers playing in a defensive shell, SMU finally broke through in the game's 80th minutes. Keirra Metcale
(Pickering, Ontario) laced a shot from 18 yards out that UW-Platteville goalkeeper Hannah Krier mishandled.
Melissa Paulson (Ham Lake, Minn.) collected the loose ball and hit the post with the rebound shot. The ball bounced right to the foot of Rahman, who put the ball in the open net to knot the game at 1-1.
"We're pretty warn out right now — it's been a tough 24-hour period," said Zimmerman, whose team returns to conference play Wednesday, playing host to Gustavus in a 4 p.m. game at Cotter Field. "We did a lot of good things this weekend — hopefully we can keep iimproving every day."
