Game Summary vs. Gustavus /
GameDay Online
ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University and Gustavus men's soccer teams entered Tuesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game headed in different directions — the Cardinals were in the midst of a five-game winless streak, while the Gusties were riding a five-game winning streak.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, a penalty kick, an own goal and a free kick kept both streaks in tact, as the red-hot Gusties handed SMU a 3-0 setback.
"It's tough," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose team also saw its winless streak against Gustavus climb to 23 straight games (0-20-3) — dating back to a 3-0 SMU victory during the 1985 season. "I didn't feel like (Gustavus) was really all that much better than we were. They are a very good, tactical team, but it wasn't like they dominated us today."
Gustavus broke a scoreless tie late in the first half, as Skylar Schulz beat SMU goalkeeper
Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) on a penalty kick. GAC's Flynn Stewart-Franzen was credited with the Gusties' second goal in the game's 73rd minute, while Fraser Horton rounded out the scoring eight minutes later, netting his first of the season off a free kick.
"It was a game of breaks — they made the most of theirs and we didn't," Dembiec said. "We gave up a bad penalty kick goal in the first half, had a ball go off one of our player's heads and into our own goal (early in the second), and then when we were pressing offensively gave up a free kick that (Gustavus) cashed in.
"Those three plays were the difference."
The Cardinals, who were shut out for the second straight game — both by 3-0 counts — return to action Saturday, playing host to Concordia in a 2 p.m. conference game at Winona State's Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.
