WINONA, Minn. — Heading into Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Concordia, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team was stuck in the midst of a six-game winless streak.

Yet, through each of those six games, SMU coach Chris Dembiec was able to find a silver lining in the dark cloud that seemed to have taken up permanent residence over the Cardinals' heads.

Against the Cobbers, however, there was no silver lining — and the dark cloud was darker than at any time during the entire season.

“That was just a poor, poor performance on our part,” said Dembiec, after his Cardinals were manhandled by the Cobbers, giving up a pair of goals in the first half and three more in the second in falling 5-0 at Winona State's Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium. “We never got into any flow at all. We've struggled offensively of late, but today, we just couldn't get anything going.

“It's been a bit of a struggle of late, but each game there was always some positives to be taken from it,” Dembiec added. “But today, there wasn't any bright spots, we were beaten in every facet of the game.”

Riley McGlynn proved to be the biggest thorn in the Cardinals' side Saturday, as the freshman forward peppered the Cardinal net with seven shots, including two that found the back of the net.

McGlynn got the Cobbers on the board in the game's 23rd minutes, and Alex Dahl added his first of the season with less than five minutes remaining, as Concordia took a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.

McGlynn would add his second of the game, in the second half, sandwiching his thir goal of the season around a pair of goals off the foot of Justin Foss, as Concordia picked up its first conference win of the season — and second straight victory vs. the Cardinals.

“It's disappointing to lose like that,” said Dembiec, whose team was shut out for the third straight game in falling to 0-3-1 in the MIAC and 1-7-1 overall. “We've got to find a way to play better than we did today — it was a struggle from start to finish.”
