WINONA, Minn. — Over the last seven seasons, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team has scored 182 goals — including 17 through eight games this season.
Of those 182 goals, however, not one had been scored against Concordia heading into Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against the Cobbers.
SMU entered Saturday's game having lost its last nine meetings vs. the Cobbers, dating back to a 2-1 SMU victory on Oct. 3, 1998. SMU had been outscored 21-3 during that span, including 14-0 in the teams' last six meetings.
Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) put an end to that streak, as the Cardinal sophomore netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season less than nine minutes into Saturday's game.
That, however would be the extent of the Cardinals' offense, as the Cobbers got a pair of goals from Sam Johnson — one in each half — in leading Concordia to a 2-1 MIAC win at Winona State's Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.
“We got off to a good start, we just couldn't seem to keep that momentum going,” said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman, whose team has now dropped its last 10 meetings vs. the Cobbers. “Amy's goal was a huge boost for us — we just didn't build on it.”
Johnson pulled the Cobbers even 16 minutes after Sibik's tally, as the two teams went into the halftime break tied 1-1. Johnson then added her second of the game — and team-leading nine of the season — 15 minutes into the second half to ice the victory.
“It's a tough loss,” Zimmerman said. “We played pretty well, and hung right with them for the most part — we just couldn't get over the hump once (Johnson) scored that second goal.”
