WINONA, Minn . —
Cherie Kulig (Independence, Wis.) enjoyed a career day Saturday, as the Saint Mary's University sophomore scored a career-best 20 points in the Cardinals' 74-58 loss to St. Catherine Saturday afternoon.
The performance was so memorable, that Kulig decided to erase it from her memory banks — and replace it with a new career-best effort.
Kulig bettered her Saturday effort by two points, netting 22 points in the Cardinals' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Concordia Sunday afternoon at the SMU Gym.
Problem was, Kulig's 22-point effort was 13 points better than the next SMU scorer, as Concordia's defense stymied the Cardinal offense in an 82-56 Cobber victory.
SMU coach
Mandy Pearson knew what to expect from the Cobbers — tough, hard-nosed defense.
And that's exactly what the Cardinals faced, as Concordia held SMU to 32 percent shooting (16-for-49) — including a 6-for-22 effort in the first half, when the Cobbers raced out to a 37-25 advantage. The Cardinals tossed in 31 points over the game's final 20 minutes, but the Cobbers did them one better — make that 14 better — as Concordia iced the win with 45 second-half points, shooting 72 percent from the field (16-for-22), while also adding a 10-for-14 effort from the free throw line.
Nearly half of Kulig's 22 ponits came from the free throw line, where the Cardinal sophomore went 10-for-11. She was also 5-for-8 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, while also adding two assists and a steal.
Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) chipped in nine points for the Cardinals, who fell to 0-9 in the MIAC and 0-12 overall.
SMU, which concluded a stretch that included five games in an eight-day stretch, now have a week off, before returning to action Saturday, playing host to St. Olaf in a 1 p.m. MIAC game at the SMU Gym.
