WINONA, Minn. — On Saturday, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to beat Lindenwood 3-2 in overtime in an exhibition game at the SMU Ice Arena.
Sunday afternoon, the same two teams squared off again, and again the Cardinals found themselves staring at a 2-0 deficit.
This time around, however, there were no late-game heroics, as the Lions — winners of two of the last three AHCA national championships — earned a split in the two-game series with a 3-1 win at the SMU Ice Arena.
“I thought we played pretty well — the effort was good, we just couldn't capitalize on the opportunities we created,” said Mannor, whose team returns to conference play next weekend, playing host to St. Catherine Friday in a 7 p.m. contest. “We did a nice job of bounce back after a bit of a rough start (on Saturday) and we did the same thing today — only this time, we just didn't have quite enough fire power.”
For the second game in a row, the Lions scored in the game's opening 30 seconds, as Krysai Martin netted her seventh goal of the season just 17 seconds into the first period. The Lions would make it 2-0 before the end of the first period, as Lisa Moreau would beat Cardinal goalie
Erin Johnson-Buscemi (Richfield, Minn.) at 17:36.
SMU got one back midway through the second period on a goal by
Stevie Fiek (Rochester, Minn.), but the Lions would added an insurance goal by Mandy Dion — who assisted on Lindenwood's first two goals — three minutes into the final period.
“This was a good series for us,” said Mannor. “(Lindenwood) is a very solid team, and heading into the long stretch of conference games, it was nice to have two games in which we could work out the kinks a bit.”
