Last Action: The Cardinals picked up their second straight victory Wednesday, getting 20-plus points from both
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) and
Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) in a
77-58 conference win over Concordia Wednesday. … St. Olaf, meanwhile, snapped a two-game losing streak with a
76-70 MIAC win over Macalester Wednesday.
Last Meeting: The Cardinals and Pipers split their season series a year ago, with each team winning on the other's home court. The Cardinals had four players score in double figures — including a game- and career-high 31 points from
Will Wright — as SMU rolled to an
89-75 win over St. Olaf on Jan. 5 in Northfield, Minn. In the rematch on Feb. 2 in Winona, Minn., Wright was held to just eight points, and SMU's offense struggled to get on track, as the Oles cruised to a
58-49 conference victory at the SMU Gym.
Cardinal Notes: Wednesday's win over Concordia gave SMU its first two-game winning streak since the 2006-2007 season. That season was also the last time the Cardinals won three straight, disposing of Saint John's, Macalester and Hamline during a five-day stretch from Jan. 22-27. … SMU's Jan. 7 win over Hamline not only snapped SMU's season-high six-game losing streak, but it also put an end to a five-game conference slide. …
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) scored a team-high 24 points vs. the Cobbers Wednesday. He has now scored 10 or more points in 32 of the team's last 38 games — including 20 or more points nine times in the Cardinals' last 13 contests. …
Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in 20 points vs. Concordia, giving SMU two 20-point scorers for the second straight game. It was the fifth time this season Holland has scored 20 or more points, and the 19th time in SMU's last 20 games that he has reached double figures. …
Bradley Bruno (Chicago, Ill.) scored a career-high 22 points, and also pulled down 10 rebounds en route to his first collegiate double-double vs. Hamline on Jan. 7. … Bruno's 22-point effort marked just the second time this season — and just the second time in SMU's last 29 games — that Holland or Wright have not led the team in scoring. … Wright and Holland enter tonight's game averaging in double figures, with Wright boasting a team-best 21.2 ppg average, while Holland is at 16.2 ppg. … Wright's 24-point night vs. Concordia was the 12th time in 13 games that the Cardinals have boasted a 20-point scorer. SMU's loss at St. Cloud State on Dec. 30 marked the only time in the Cardinals' 11 games that they have not had a 20-point scorer. … SMU's 80 points vs. Hamline was the second time this season the Cardinals have scored 80 or more points. The other came in an 84-70 victory over MacMurray on Nov. 22. … SMU made a season-best eight 3-pointers vs. the Cobbers Wednesday, while also shooting a season-best 86 percent (13-for-15) from the free throw line. SMU's 14 assists were also a season high.
Ole Notes: The Oles come into today's game having won back-to-back games twice — beating Luther (80-59) and Martin Luther (70-59 on Nov. 24 and Dec. 1; and Augsburg (57-55) and Saint John's (71-59). On the flip side the Oles have had losing streaks of two (twice) and and three games. … The 81 points allowed in back-to-back losses to Gustavus and Bethel last week were season-highs. The Oles had limited their previous two opponents to 55 and 57 points, respectively. ... Only two other teams — Hamline (77 points on Nov. 17) and the University of South Dakota (77 on Dec. 30) — have scored 70 or more points in St. Olaf's first 13 games. … The Oles' Bobby Fong had a game-high and season-best 24 points in last Saturday's loss at Bethel. Fong followed that up with a team-high 17 points in Wednesday's win over Macalester. … Fong is the only St. Olaf player averaging in double figures, boasting a 15.9 ppg average. … Four of the team's top nine players in terms of playing time are first-year players — Fong, Stu Neville, Alfie Jaryan and Mark Wieloch. … Jaryan scored 16 points vs. Maclaester Wednesday — 14 of which came from the free throw line, where he was 14 of 16.
