ST. PAUL, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University swimming and diving coach
Eric Lindquist, Saturday afternoon was like finding that perfect Christmas present — and getting it on sale, too.
After all, when it came to victories Saturday, the Cardinals gave their head coach a three-for-one discount — one venue, three wins.
The SMU women picked up dual-meet wins over Hamline and Augsburg at the Hamline Quadrangular Saturday, while the Cardinals coming up short in their dual against St. Catherine.
“It was a good day for us,” understated Lindquist, whose men's team also picked up a dual-meet win Saturday, beating Hamline 111-78. “We had some very good swims, and for us to come away with three (dual-meet) wins on the afternoon, that's awesome.”
Jennifer Salzman (Hilo, Hawaii) led the way for the Cardinal women, picking up firsts in the 200 freestyle (2:10.49) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.81), while the duos of Nikki Farmer (Medford, Wis.) and Courtney Keyler (Shorewood, Minn.), and Kristina Empanger (Chaska, Minn.) and #Angela Lager (Stewartville, Minn.) went 1-2 in the 100 back and 100 freestyle, respectively. Farmer clocked a winning time of 1:09.60 in the 100 back, with Keyler close behind in 1:11.01, while Empaner was first to touch the wall in the 500 freestyle (6:35.87), followed by Lager's 6:36.68.
Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.) chipped in a first in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.46) and was also a part of both of SMU's winning relays.
On the men's side, Tim Tysk (St. Paul, Minn.) and John Fox (Winona, Minn.) led the Cardinal charge, as Tysk was first in the 50 freestyle (23.06) and second in the 100 butterfly (56.48), while Fox was first in both the 100 breaststroke (1:02.35) and 100 freestyle (52.00). Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) also collected a first-place finish for the SMU men, touching the wall in 59.54 in the 100 backstroke.
“This was a very good meet for us,” Lindquist said. “It's good to get everyone into a competitive setting and see what they could do. Overall, I was very pleased.”
