ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team, coming off their second straight conference win of the young season — a convincing 76-61 home win over Bethel — hit the road on Monday, traveling to Gustavus for a 7:30 p.m. MIAC showdown against the Gusties.

Last Action: Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) scored a team-high 16 points and led four SMU players in double figures, as the Cardinals picked up their second straight conference win, a 76-61 victory over Bethel Saturday at the SMU Gym. Gustavus, meanwhile, outlasted Concordia in overtime, as Phil Wirtjes hit a half court shot with less than one second to play, giving the Gusties a 57-54 victory over the Cobbers on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.

A Year Ago: Gustavus came up with a conference sweep against the Cardinals last season.

December 8, 2008: The Gusties, who could not shake the pesky Cardinals in settling for a nine-point, 40-31 halftime advantage, finally shook loose early in the second half and never looked back in handing SMU an 81-62 MIAC setback at the SMU Gym.

January 28, 2009: Gustavus used a 14-8 run over the game's final three minutes — including a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line in the final minute — to turn a 52-51 advantage into a 66-59 conference victory.

With the seventh of his 16 points vs. Bethel, Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) became the 25th in men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-career point mark. Wright enters today's game with 1,009 career points, 35 points behind Al Williams for 23rd all time. … Wright's 16-point effort was the 29th time in SMU's last 31 games that the SMU junior has scored 10 or more points. Wright has now scored in double figures in 51 of his 55 collegiate games. … Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.), who scored a season-high 27 points against Macalester last Wednesday, chipped in 15 points vs. the Royals. … Holland's 27-point effort was just three points shy of the career-best 30 points he netted vs. Concordia on Feb. 23, 2008. … Holland, who scored 19 of his 27 points vs. Macalester in the first half, knocked down a season-high five 3-pointers vs. Macalester. … SMU had its streak of five straight games with at least one 20-point scorer snapped vs. Bethel, but the Cardinals did boast a season-high four players with 10 or more points. … Chris Palmer (Faribault, Minn.) tossed in 12 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to record his first collegiate double-double. … With their win over Bethel, the Cardinals are 2-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2005-06 season, when the Cardinals opened with wins over Augsburg (61-56) and Macalester (69-64). … SMU will be gunning for their first 3-0 conference start since 1977-78, when the won their first four MIAC games, before finishing the year 12-6 in conference play. … The Cardinals enter today's game boasting three players averaging in double figures — Holland (19.5 ppg), Wright (18.0 ppg) and Palmer (11.3 ppg). … Holland, who extended his consecutive games played streak to 55 vs. Bethel, leads the team in 3-pointers with 15, while Wright is shooting a team-best 87 percent (33-for-38) from the free throw line. … Today's game is the final home game of 2009 for the Cardinals, who play at Gustavus (Monday), St. Thomas (Wednesday) and Winona State (Dec. 28), before returning home to take on Saint John's on Jan. 2, 2010.

Gustavus' three-point win over Concordia Saturday was the Gusties' second straight and third in the last four games. … With their victory over Concordia on Saturday, the Gusties have now beaten the Cobbers 18 straight times on Gustavus' home court. … After scoring 60 or more points in each of their first two games, the Gusties have been held under 58 points in their last two — both wins. … Ryan McPartland scored a team-high 17 points vs. the Cobbers, hitting on 8 of 12 field goal attempts. … McPartland is the fourth different player in GAC's four games to lead the team in scoring. … Paul Blacklock, meanwhile, led the team in rebounding for the third time in five games, pulling down nine boards vs. the Cobbers. … Gustavus does not have a playing averaging in double figures, as McPartland and Tyler Gray lead the GAC offense with 9.8 ppg averages.
