Last Meeting: The Cardinals shot a dismal 7-for-16 from the field in the first half — and were even worse in the second (9-for-25) — were no match for the high-flying Tommies, as UST rolled to a 102-64 MIAC victory on Dec. 10 at the SMU Gym.
A Year Ago: The Tommies posted a pair of conference wins over the Cardinals in the teams' two MIAC meetings a year ago.
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) scored a game-high 24 points, but it was not enough, as UST used a 26-19 run over the game's final 12 minutes to escape the SMU Gym with a 72-65 win on Nov. 28. St. Thomas then got scoring from 15 different players — including a game-high 15 points from Alex Healy — and scored more points in the second half (54) than the Cardinals did in the entire game (49), as the Tommies rolled to a 100-49 victory on Jan. 23.
Cardinal Notes: The Cardinals' loss to Saint John's was their third straight and fifth in their last seven games. … The Cardinals held the high-scoring Gusties to their fourth-lowest offensive output of the season in last Wednesday's 66-59 loss to Gustavus. … The Cardinals' 70-65 overtime win over Macalester on Jan. 21 completed the Cardinals' season sweep of the Scots, and snapped a two-game losing streak. … The Cardinals' win over the Scots was also their first overtime game since the 2002-03 season, when SMU lost to UST 65-62. SMU's last overtime win came on Dec. 6, 2000, when the Cardinals posted an 80-70 win over St. Olaf. …
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) scored a team-high 16 points in the Cardinals' loss to SJU Saturday. Wright has now scored 10 or more points in 38 of the team's last 44 games — including 20 or more points 10 times in the Cardinals' last 16 contests. … Wright boasts the team's top seven offensive performances, including a season- and career-best 41 points vs. MacMurray on Nov. 22. … He and
Bradley Bruno (Chicago, Ill.) also share the tam lead with two double-doubles each. Wright boasted 22 points and 10 rebounds vs. Winona State, and 41 points and 10 boasts vs. MacMurray, while Bruno posted 22 points and 10 boasts vs. Hamine and 12 points and 10 rebounds vs. Macalester. …
Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.), who had led the team in scoring in its previous four games, chipped in 15 vs. the Johnnies. Holland has reached double figures in 24 of the team's last 26 games, including 20 or more points seven times this season. … Holland's 20-point effort vs. Bethel on Jan. 24 marked the 15th time in SMU's 19 games in which SMU boasted at least one 20-point scorer. … Holland's team-leading 13-point effort vs. Augsburg on Jan. 19 was also the fewest by the team's leading scorer all season. … Bruno's 22-point effort by Bruno vs. Hamline on Jan. 7 was just the second time this season — and just the second time in SMU's last 35 games — that Holland or Wright have not led the team in scoring. … Wright and Holland enter tonight's game averaging in double figures, with Wright boasting a team-best 20.2 ppg average, while Holland is at 16.5 ppg. Wright is also ranked No. 2 in the MIAC in scoring with his 19.4 ppg average. … SMU's win at Macalester on Jan. 21 is its only road win in nine tries this season. … SMU's 59 points vs. Gustavus last marked the fourth time this season the Cardinals have been held under 60 points. … SMU held the Gusties to just 66 points Wednesday — the fourth time this season the Cardinals have held their opponent under 70 points.
Tommie Notes: St. Thomas not only enters tonight's game as the nation's No. 1 ranked team, but the Tommies are also a perfect 19-0. … St. Thomas is the lone Division III men's teams still unbeaten. Among 1,300 men's college teams in Division I, II and III and NAIA, the Tommies join D-II's Findlay (17-0) and C.W. Post (15-0). … Two of UST's 19 wins have come in overtime — a 94-87 win over UW-L and a 72-69 victory over Concordia-St. Paul. … Joe Scott scored a team-leading 19 points vs. Macalester Saturday and leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.1 ppg. … With their lopsided win over Macalester Saturday — in which UST held Macalester to 12 first-half points ¬— the Tommies completed a perfect 10-0 record in January and improved UST to 17-0 vs. MIAC opponents since February, 2008. … Last season UST's three seniors, all backups, combined to average 4.6 ppg; this year's four seniors —Lonnie Robinson, B.J Viau, Al McCoy and Brett Tuma — have combined to score 32 ppg. … The Tommies have held MIAC opponents under 65 points in 12 of 13 games, all wins...
