STEVENS POINT, Wis. — If there's one thing Saint Mary's University track and field coach Shawn McMahon never gets tired of, it's watching Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, WIs.) compete.

And compete.

And compete.

Heinzen has been a busy individual of late, and Saturday's UW-Stevens Point Eastbay Invitational was no exception, as the Cardinal junior posted the Cardinals' lone first-place finish, while also adding a fifth- and a seventh-place effort to pace the SMU women to a seventh-place finish.

“It was a good meet for us,” said SMU coach Shawn McMahon, who also watched as Chris Fisette (Elmhurst, Ill.) tallied a pair of fifth-place finishes to lead SMU to its 10th-place team finish. “Teri had a great performance in the long jump, and several other individuals put together really solid showings.

“Overall, I'm very pleased with what I saw today.”

Heinzen inched closed to breaking the school's nine-year-old long jump record, putting together a leap of 5.26 meters to edge UW-Stout's Ashley Peters one 0.1 meters. Heinzen's season-best leap is just shy of Kari Pederson's school-record mark of 5.45 meters, set in 1999.

And that was just the beginning for Heinzen, who also placed fifth in the triple jump (10.39 meters) and clocked a seventh-place time of 27.18 in the 200. Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) chipped in a fourth-place effort in the shot put (11.80 meters), while also placing 13th in the weight throw (11.43 meters).

Fisette led the way for the Cardinal men, placing fifth in both the long jump (6.62 meters) and the triple jump (13.38 meters), with Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.) placing ninth in the 400 (51.82) and Quentin Moore (Minneapolis, Minn.) finishing 14th in the mile run (4:38.56).

“I like what I've seen thus far this season,” McMahon said. “Everyone seems to be on the right pace, hopefully our times can just continue to drop.”
