Last Action:
The Cardinals were outscored 15-6 to end the first half and 17-5 to end the second in falling to St. Catherine 60-51 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in St Paul, Minn., on Saturday. … Hamline, meanwhile, picked up a key road win, dropping Gustavus 68-62 in St. Peter, Minn., on Saturday.

Last Meeting: For 20 minutes, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team could do no wrong against Hamline, as the Cardinals scored 29 first-half points en route to a five-point, 29-25 halftime advantage. For the other 20 minutes, however, the Cardinals could do no right, as SMU shot just 21 percent from the field in the second half — scoring just 22 points — as Hamline, fueled by a 39-point second half, rallied for a 64-51 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory on Jan. 7 in St. Paul, Minn.

A Year Ago: Hamline picked up a pair of wins against the Cardinals in their two conference meetings a year ago. The Cardinals found themselves staring at a three-point, 37-34, deficit after the game's opening 20 minutes — and once again, a second-half chill frosted over the SMU basket. SMU made just 8 of 29 field goal attempts — including just 1 of 11 from behind the 3-point line — as the Pipers pulled away for a 79-65 at the SMU Gym on Dec. 5. In the rematch on Feb. 9 in St. Paul, Minn., Hamline shot 44 percent from the field in the game's opening 20 minutes to build a seven-point, 32-25 advantage at the break, and never looked back in the second half, outscoring SMU 41-32 to complete the 16-point, 73-59 victory.

Cardinal Notes: Emily DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn.) scored a team-high 10 points in Saturday's loss to St. Catherine. It was the second time this season the Cardinal freshman has scored 10 or more points. She netted a career-best 12 points vs. St. Olaf on Jan. 17.… Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) scored a team-high 20 points vs. Carleton last Wednesday. It was the second time this season the SMU sophomore has netted 20 or more points, and was just three points shy of her career-best 23-point effort vs. Bethel on Jan. 24. …  Jesa Hall (Glenwood City, Wis.) scored a team- and career-best 21 points in SMU's 69-66 loss at Augsburg on Jan. 19. Hall's previous career high was 15 points, a total she has now equaled four times this season. … The Cardinals enter today's game ranked No. 3 in the MIAC in 3-point field goals made (112) and 3-point field goal percentage (35 percent, 112-for-321). … Hall is third in the conference in 3-pointers made (38), while DeWitt is fifth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (42 percent, 25-for-57, respectively). … Miller and Cherie Kulig (Independence, Wis.) enter today's game vs. the Pipers averaging in double figures, with Miller boasting a team-best 11.2 ppg average, while Kulig is close behind at 10.4 ppg. … The Cardinals' defense clamped down on UST last Monday. After surrendering 102 points vs. the Tommies in their first meeting, SMU held UST to just 54 Monday — the second-fewest points allowed by the Cardinals this season. … SMU's 73-69 win over Bethel on Jan. 24 was the Cardinals' first overtime game since a 66-60 OT loss to St. Olaf on Jan. 31, 2007. The last time SMU had won an overtime game was a 75-73 OT win over — ironically — Bethel on Jan. 2, 2006. …  All there of the Cardinals' wins this season have come at home, where SMU is 3-7. …  SMU's 73 points vs. Bethel on Jan. 24 were a season high, and the most scored by the Cardinals since netting 73 in a 73-59 win over Augsburg on Jan. 13, 2007.

Piper Notes: Saturday's win at Gustavus snapped the Pipers' season-high three-game losing streak. Hamline is now 9-3 in its last 12 games. … Jessica Heinen became just the eighth Piper woman to score 1,000 career points, scoring 14 points in Hamline's win over Gustavus Saturday. Heinen now enters today's game with 1,004 points and is 109 behind Stacey Thill for the No. 7 spot in Piper scoring history. … The Pipers' 14 wins have been equally split, with Hamline going 7-4 at home and 7-3 on the road. … Mary Wilkowski is the team's scoring leader at 14.0 ppg and is one of three Pipers averaging in double figures. Heinen (13.0 ppg) and Jackie Kelly (10.1 ppg) are the other two. … Witkowski also ranks fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 14.1 ppg in 18 MIAC games. … The Pipers rank third in the MIAC in scoring offense, averaging 69.4 ppg.
