ST. PETER, Minn. — Shawn McMahon had a simple approach to Friday's Lee Krough Invitational — it was a chance for his Saint Mary's University track and field athletes to “get a little work in.”
Cardinal junior
Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.) had other ideas.
“A little work” wouldn't suffice for Ryks, who decided to run the fastest 400 time in school history, clocking a school-record time of 50.44 to highlight the Cardinals' performances at the non-team-scored event.
“It was a good day for us,” said McMahon. “We weren't expecting a whole lot from this meet — it was just a chance for everyone to get a little work in. Give Josiah credit, he ran a great race, and for him to set a new school record, that's just frosting on the cake.”
Ryks also posted a time of 23.80 in the 200, while
Quentin Moore (Minneapolis, Minn.) stopped the clock in 4:18.32 in the 1,500,
Curt VanAsten (Shicton, Wis.) broke the tape in 58.81 in the 400 hurdles, and
Kevin Hein (Zumbro Falls, Minn.) put together a throw of 37.59 meters in the shot put.
On the women's side,
Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) led the SMU charge, posting a throw of 11.43 meters in the shot put, with Kassandra Burtis (Fairmont, Minn.) adding a throw of 37.86 in the hammer throw.
“We didn't have a ton of people competing, so it was a pretty laid-back meet,” said McMahon, whose team gets back into “full” competition next Friday, when they host the UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge at the SMU Track. “But those that did compete did a nice job — it was a solid effort all the way around.”
