ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships are less than three weeks away, and the Saint Mary's University track and field teams got their first good look at the rest of the conference field Wednesday evening at the Macalester/Hamline Twilight.

And SMU coach Shawn McMahon liked the way his teams stacked up.

“It was a good meet for us,” said McMahon, whose women's team was led by Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) and Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Wis.), while Jared Brandenburg (Independence, Wis.) fueled the SMU men. “This was our first real good look at the rest of the teams in the conference, and I was pretty pleased with what I saw from our guys — I like the way we stacked up.”

Heinzen and Harstad each posted a third- and fourth-place finish, with Heinzen taking third in the long jump (5.01 meters) and fourth in the 100 (13.05), while Harstad was third in the shot put (12.23 meters) and fourth in the hammer (44.42).

More importantly, Heinzen's lead in the long jump and Harstad's toss in the hammer were the top finishes among MIAC schools Wednesday. Three athletes from the University of Minnesota bested Harstad in the hammer, with Katie Johnson of Concordia-St. Paul and Nancy Hudack of UW-Superior topping Heinzen's long jump mark.

Also turning in solid performances for the Cardinal women were Annie Garrigan (Orland Park, Ill.) and Lizzy Daugherty (Robbinsdale, Minn.) in the 100, where they finished sixth (13.44) and seventh (13.56), respectively. Bridget Coffou (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) chipped in a seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.80), while Stephanie Sturges (Woodbury, Minn.) was eighth in the 200 (27.88).

On the men's side, Brandenburg broke the tape in 4:05.31 to finish seventh in the 1,500, while Ryan Wockenfuss (New London, Wis.) and Chris Fisette (Elmurst, Ill.) were eighth in the javelin (42.90 meters) and long jump (6.21 meters), respectively.

The Cardinals are right back in action Saturday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., to take part in the Drake Alternative, hosted by Gustavus.
