ST. PETER, Minn. — The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships are getting closer, and the Saint Mary's University track and field times keep getting lower.
It's a perfect combination for SMU coach Shawn McMahon.
Emily Dee (Racine, Minn.) proved to be the fastest of the fast for the Cardinals at the Drake Alternative hosted by Gustavus Saturday afternoon, bringing home her first first-place effort of the season, winning the 1,500 in 4:59.96 — more than 10 seconds faster than her season-best time of 5:10.00.
Jared Brandenburg (Independence, Wis.) picked up the Cardinals' other first-place showing, breaking the tape in 4:07.78 in the 1,500.
Along with Dee's effort in the 1,500, the SMU women also got a second-place time of 26.47 and a third-place lead of 10.52 meters in the triple jump by
Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.).
Brittany Kuehn (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) chipped in a fourth in the 200 (27.14), while
Stephanie Sturges (Woodbury, Minn.) was sixth in the 100 (14.04),
Ashley Acosta (Winnebago, Minn.) was seventh in the 800 (2:30.60),
Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) was seventh in the hammer throw (43.23 meters) and ninth in the shot put (11.84 meters), and
Joanna Pace (Minocqua, Wis.) was ninth in the pole vault (2.92 meters),
On the men's side, Curtis VanAsten (Shiocton, Wis.) added a sixth in the 110 hurdles (17.43), while
Marty Howard (Chicago, Ill.) was seventh in the 800 (2:01.84),
Quentin Moore (Minneapolis, Minn.) was seventh in the 1,500 (4:17.39),
Cole Resleff (Stewartville, Minn.) was seventh in the high jump (1.70 meters), and
Benton Kodet (Northfield, Minn.) was eighth in the 800 (2:02.61).
The Cardinals kick off a busy week this week on Wednesday, taking part in the St. Thomas Tommie Twilight, before closing out the regular season at the Central Invitational on Friday. The MIAC Outdoor Championships are set for May 8-9 in Northfield, Minn.
