NORTHFIELD, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University's Joe Holman (Suamico, Wis.), the first-ever appearance in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decathlon was a bittersweet experience.

Sweet in that he was one of just 13 athletes in the entire conference competing in the exclusive event.

Bitter in that the Cardinal senior settled for a 13th-place finish after the first five events in the two-day, 10-event competition, and could not improve his standing during Friday's second day of competition, finishing with 4,053 points.

Holman posted his best finishes in the 100 and the 400 during the opening day of the two-day event, clocking times of 12.35 and 58.11, respectively, while adding a 10th in the high jump (5-1 ¼), a 12th in the long jump (17-1 ¼) and a 13th in the shot put (24-9 ¼).On Friday, Holman posted his best finish, placing fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 9.06, while adding 10ths in the pole vault (9-9 1/4) and javelin (103-1), a 12th in the 1,500 (5:34.48) and a 13th in the discus (71-11 3/4).

Saint John's Brayden Wagner, fourth after the first day, leap-frogged the rest of the competition to win the even with 6,435 points, edging out Concordia's Paul Westmark (6,397). First-day leader Ryan Doyle placed third (6,207), followed by Marly Simmons of Concordia (5,927) and Concordia's Paul Shol (5,691).
