NORTHFIELD, Minn. — All season long, Kevin Hein (Zumbro Falls, Minn.) has slowly worked his way up the discus ladder.

After placing seventh in his first meet of the outdoor season and eighth in his second, Hein climbed to third with a toss of 43.54 meters at last weekend's Central Invitational.

And, fortunately for Saint Mary's University track and field coach Shawn McMahon, that was just a sign of things to come.

Good things.

Very good things.

Hein uncorked his best throw of the season at the year's biggest event, recording a toss of 44.50 meters to place third in the discus during Friday's opening day of the two-day Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

“Kevin had a huge day,” said McMahon. “We knew he was capable of putting together a throw like that, and it was great to see him do it on the conference's biggest stage.”

Hein's effort wasn't the only strong showing for the Cardinals' during Friday's events.

Chris Fisette (Elmhurst, Ill.), hobbled by injuries all season long, closed out his collegiate career with a sixth place finish in the long jump (6.48 meters), while Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) added a seventh-place performance in the shot put (12.10 meters).

Jared Brandenburg (Independence, Wis.) earned a spot in Saturday's finals in the 1,500 with his time of 4:10.33), while Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) put together the fourth-fastest 200 time, stopping the clock in 26.06 to reach today's final. Emily Dee (Racine, Minn.) also qualified for today's finals, running a 4:58.96 in the 1,500.

“I'm pleased with our performance,” said McMahon, whose men are sitting ninth in the team standings, while the women are 10th. “We've still got some work to do, and, hopefully, we'll get some more solid efforts.”
