WINONA, Minn. — The good news for the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team was, Saturday's game was not the third straight 5-2 loss to St. Olaf.
The bad news? It was a loss just the same.
The Cardinals, who had dropped their first two meetings vs. the Oles this season by identical 5-2 scores, surrendered a goal with five seconds remaining in the opening period and never recovered, falling to St. Olaf 4-1 at the SMU Ice Arena Saturday.
“The effort today was much better (than Friday),” said SMU coach
Bill Moore. “There was no flow Friday — way too many penalties. We just did not play very well. Tonigth, I thought we played much better, the effort, by far, was better.
“We've just got to find a way to do a better job of creating scoring opportunities — and then finishing on them.”
Isak Tranvik got the Oles on the board at 10:05 of the opening period, and SMU quickly responded, as
Trevor Tolibas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) netted his third of the season a minute later.
The game remained 1-1 until the Caleb Harrison picked up a loose puck, broke in on SMU goalie
Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) and beat the freshman goalie — and the game clock — to give the Oles a 2-1 lead with five seconds remaining.
St. Olaf would pad its lead to 3-1 late in the second period, and Harrison would add his second of the game into an empty net at 19:25 of the third to seal the win.
Horstman, who stopped 41 shots in Friday's loss, finished with 24 saves Saturday, while St. Olaf goalie Nick Krauss kicked out 18 of SMU's 19 shots.
The Cardinals (1-5-0 MIAC, 1-13-1 overall) return to conference play on Friday, traveling to Blaine, Minn., for a 7 p.m. contest against Bethel.
