ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team matched high-powered Macalester point-for-point over the game's final 20 minutes Wednesday evening.
The Cardinals knocked down 18 field goals — including two 3-pointers — and added five free throws en route to their 43 second-half points, while the Scots used 15 field goals — including two 3-pointers — and 11 free throws to score their 43 second-half points.
Unfortunately, things didn't go quite that well in the first half, as Macalester raced out to a 28-point first half lead and never let the Cardinals back into the ball game in handing SMU a 91-63 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.
Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) carried the hot hand for SMU (3-9 MIAC, 4-11 overall), scoring a team-best 18 points. The junior hit 7 of 11 field goals and was 4-for-5 from the line in scoring 10 or more points for the third straight game and the 11th time in the Cardinals' first 15 games.
Emily DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn.) chipped in a career-high 11 points, while
Cherie Kulig (Independence, Wis.) finished with nine points and three assists.
Trina PaStar led four Scot scorers in double figures, tossing in a game-high 23 points, going 10-for-15 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line. Jessica Rene added 16 points, while Danielle Johnson and Shannon Rene finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Cardinals are back in action — and back on the road — on Saturday, traveling to Bethel for a 1 p.m. contest against the Royals.
