RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Saint Mary's University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both got off on the right foot in Saturday's duals against UW-River Falls, as both the men's and women's 400 medley relay teams picked up first-place finishes in the opening event of the meet.
From there, however, it was the Falcons who were touching the wall first, as UW-River Falls swept the nonconference duals, beating the SMU men 102-82 and the SMU women 120-91.
“The event order was tough for us for the way we are set up right now,” said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. “It was great to see both of men's and women's medley relay teams kick off the meet with first-place finishes, we just weren't quite deep enough to hang with them in several of the other events.”
Tim Tysk (St. Paul, Minn.) collected a pair of firsts for the SMU men, as the sophomore won the 50 freestyle (22.83), touching the wall just in front of teammate
John Fox (Winona, Minn. / 22.88), while also winning the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.21.
Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) also collected a first for the Cardinal men, touching the wall in 4:40.83 in winning the 400 IM, while
Jennifer Salzman (Hilo, Hawaii) won the 50 freestyle for the SMU women with a time of 27.51.
The Cardinals also dominated the diving completion, going 1-2 on both the men's and women's side. Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Rachel Steinkamp (Lakeville, Minn.) went 1-2 on the women's side with scores of 192.65 and 130.00 in the one-meter, while
Andrew Noyes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Tony Wolfe (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) did the same on the men's side, with scores of 162.45 and 90.35.
“I was happy with the way we performed,” said Lindquist. “We're getting closer to the conference championships, so it's good to see everyone putting together solid swims.”
