WINONA, Minn. — Officially, the meet was called the Saint Mary's University Triangular.
When the meet ended, however, SMU coach
Eric Lindquist had a new name for the three-team meet — The
Liz Flynn Show.
Flynn swept both diving events to highlight the Cardinals' effort in Saturday's triangular with Carleton and Luther.
“Liz had a great, great day,” said Lindquist of his sophomore diver. “It was nice to see her perform the way she did against some really tough competition.”
As for the rest of the Cardinals, Lindquist was equally impressed.
“Our place finishes may not really show it, but I thought we swam very well — against two extremely deep and talented teams,” he said. “Overall, this was a very good meet for us.”
Flynn collected her first first in the one-meter diving competition, totaling 196.73 points, while completing the sweep with 184.42 points in the three-meter event.
Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.) chipped in a fifth-place showing in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.75)
Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) led the way for the Cardinal men, finishing fourth in the 100 backstroke (58.25) and 500 freestyle (5:17.57), while
Tim Tysk (St. Paul, Minn.) finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (55.85) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (23.30), and
John Fox (Winona, Minn.) added a fifth in the 50 freestyle (23.28) and a sixth in the 200 IM (2:15.67).
“This was a good meet for us — especially off such a long layoff,” said Lindquist, whose team closes out its home schedule next Saturday with the SMU Quadrangular. “We've been training hard, and today we were able to see just where we are at as we start gearing up for the conference championships.”
