WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University's
Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Island, Mich.) recorded her first collegiate hat trick on Saturday in helping the Cardinal women's hockey team to a
5-2 victory over Concordia.
On Monday, Coolsaet earned another first — her first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor.
Coolsaet picked the ideal time to put her offensive talents to good use on Saturday, as the freshman forward scored all three of her goals in the game's final 20 minutes — turning a 2-1 nailbiter into a 5-2 victory.
The team's leader in goals (6) and points (7), Coolsaet has now recorded her first collegiate two-goal and three-goals games in SMU's first six contests. She had netted a pair of goals in the Cardinals' season-opening 5-0 win Marian — missing out on the hat trick when her third-period shot clanked of the goal post.
With Coolsaet leading the charge, the Cardinals have raced out to a 4-1-1 start to the season — including last weekend's
3-3 tie and 5-2 victory in the Cardinals' conference-opening series at Concordia.
SMU is back in conference play this weekend, traveling to Hamline for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, before returning home to host the Pipers in a 4 p.m. contest at the SMU Ice Arena on Saturday.
