ST. PAUL, Minn. — It was the first “official” meet of the season, and Saint Mary's University swimming and diving coach Eric Lindquist officially tabbed it a success.

“It was a great first meet for us,” said Lindquist, whose Cardinal men's and women's teams each placed third at Saturday's Hamline Invitational. “By far the highlight of the meet was the performance of Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) — she had a awesome day. A lot of people were getting their first real taste of a collegiate meet, and they swam well.

“Overall, I was very pleased with the way we performed.”

Flynn, who finished in the top eight in both the one-meter and the three-meter at last year's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Championships, won both events Saturday, recording 167.25 points to win the one-meter, while totaling 203.75 points in winning the three-meter.

Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) also had a sold start to the season, collecting a time of 58.92 in the backstroke, while Abby Kratzke stopped in the clock in 1:08.26 in the 100 butterfly.

“We had a lot of very good performances,” Lindquist said. “This was the type of meet I was looking for to give us a bit of a measuring stick for the rest of the season. I think we set the bar pretty high — now we have to keep improving on it.”

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, traveling to St. Thomas for a 1 p.m. meet.
